The way I like to think about doing SEO (search engine optimization) is that it's like having work done on my car. Sure, I can try to do it myself (and I've tried a few things) but it would take me a lot of time and I might get it wrong - no, I probably would mess it up myself. So it's better to hand that job off to professionals who know what they're doing and get the job done right.
Here's a good article I just found today:Search Engine Optimization is Better Left in the Hands of the Professionals (www.nogeekwebsites.com)Having an Internet website is similar to having a store in the real world. If you want to be successful with your business, you need to make sure that you have people coming to your website regularly. Of course, it is not enough for you to simply have people come by your website who are going to look at it, you want to pull in real buyers. That is where search engine optimization comes into play, a process that will allow you to pull free people into your website that have money to spend on what it is that you are offering.
I talked with a client last week who gets it. He's got a local daycare business and needs people to find him on the web so that they can fill their summer and fall classes. He's showing up ok in search results but is spending a lot of money (I think a lot of money) using Google AdWords. We looked at his website and right away, I saw 5 things wrong with it. I gave it to my team to look over and they found 10 more things. The website designer that he hired admittedly didn't do any SEO and it showed.
If you hire an SEO company, don't hire one that will guarantee a top spot because you really almost can't do that. They can promise a boost in rankings and that's actually not too hard to do for a lot of websites. Depending on the industry and competition, getting a site to #1 can be work (money). There are other ways that money can be spent to get you more traffic without you being ranked #1 for a certain keyword.
